AMSTERDAM, October 3, 2008 - Galerie Gabriel Rolt is proud to present Nobody in the Chair Nobody in the Books Nobody in the Rain, an exhibition of recent paintings, drawings and installations by Heide Nord (Halle/Saale, Germany, 1980) and Sebastian Burger (Magdeburg, 1980), from October 18 through November 22.

Heide Nord is fascinated by the relationship between nature, science and human existence. Using painting, drawing and objects, within cabinet-like installations, she creates what might be considered an exploration of the role of visual arts in society.  With her combination of the abstract and the figurative, pop and high culture, intuitive and conceptual thinking, formal and narrative elements within different medias, Nord embraces contradictions into her work.

The works by Sebastian Burger shown in the exhibition are inspired by Dutch genre painting of the seventeenth century, with regards to their use of colour and light. This collection might be viewed as different rooms of an anonymous building; one that has been abandoned, leaving the traces and remnants of its former history. Each painting builds a narrative and portrait of the architecture. The outside is never seen, the only signal of life being areas of piercing, artificial light which serve to hide and obscure areas of the room. The result is hermetic, claustrophobic and isolated spaces, which might at once be nightmarish, or a place of retreat and safe haven.

Like the come-down after one big party, Burger and Nord's work depicts an emptiness and loss of meaning. They each grew up during the political upheaval of the late 1980's and this ever-present history and instability is reflected in the work.  Their silent revolt is romantic, ideology-free and aesthetic.
